Radiology and imaging

Ultrasound and ECG to help doctors see what is happening inside the body.

Imaging lets doctors look inside the body without surgery. Our radiology unit provides ultrasound scans and electrocardiograms (ECG), and works closely with the outpatient, maternity and emergency teams.

Ultrasound

An ultrasound scan uses sound waves to show organs and, in pregnancy, the baby. It is painless and uses no radiation. Common scans include pregnancy scans, abdominal and pelvic scans, and scans of the kidneys and bladder. For some abdominal and pelvic scans you will be asked to drink water and not empty your bladder before the scan.

ECG

An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart through small stickers placed on the chest, arms and legs. It takes a few minutes and helps doctors assess chest pain, palpitations and high blood pressure.

Results

The person who performs the scan writes a report for your doctor, who explains the findings to you.
